I recently posted about how this year is a New Year, New Me! Like a lot of mothers (I am sure), I run around making sure everyone is washed, fed and the chores are done – I seem to completely forget about my own needs. I have lost count of the times I have missed breakfast or lunch, sometimes both.
I always thought to myself, “it doesn’t matter, I need to loose weight anyway”. Little did I know that not eating enough can actually stop you from loosing weight. It is widely documented that if you don’t properly fuel your body, it can develop a defence mechanism against the perceived threat of starvation, causing you to retain or gain weight. As time is at the essence in my life, I decided to try smoothie breakfasts in the morning. I purchased a Breville Blender from Amazon for just £20. What I love about this blender is that it’s compact, easy to clean and comes with two sports style bottles so you can take your smoothie on the move.
For now, I have only started to experiment with fruit smoothies, although I intend to try some vegetable ones later on. Fruit can be expensive and has short shelf life – don’t let this put you off though! I bought some plastic containers, prepared my fruit and freezed all of it. Not only does this stop the fruit spoiling, it makes your smoothies ice cold!
There are literally hundreds of smoothies recipes on the net – the combinations really are endless! For now, the fruit I am using is:-
- Bananas – Packed with potassium
- Kiwi – High in vitamin C
- Cantaloupe Melon – Packed with vitamin A
- Strawberries – Nutrient-rich and packed with antioxidants (like vitamin C)
- Blueberries – Contains high levels of antioxidants
When making your smoothies, you can add many things to your fruit such as ice, milk, coconut water, almond milk etc. I personally have been trying a small amount of semi skimmed milk and YeoValley Natural yogurt. Initially, I thought perhaps yogurt would be fattening, however according to many sources, natural yogurt can help when trying to loose weight as well as a great aid to your stomach and digestion. I have now been having a smoothie every morning for the last two weeks. I have noticed that my body now feels hungry in the morning, before I didn’t even think about food in the morning. I have made no other changes to my lifestyle at the moment and have lost 4 lbs in these two weeks.
For someone who has been struggling to loose any weight at all, this makes me a very happy lady! I am going to continue with my smoothie testing and will update you as I go.
